Many people, to a certain extent, attribute corruption for the last economic crisis in Asia.
This has managed to make people all over the world realize corruption and economic growth cannot sustain in the same environment. Now there is an awareness that corruption creates obstacles for foreign investment and weakens development.
Civil society now has tools to fight corruption. Officials and organizations are now equipping themselves to fight corruption but it is important the following realizations are first understood.
- Solutions to fight corruption must focus on the economic, political and institutional causes of corruption
- The government, private sector and civil society must be involved in developing systems that are mutually beneficial
- Long-term sustainable programs must consist of number of economic and public sector reforms like deregulation, privatization, transparency and institution building along with preventive measures suitable for different local conditions
Many countries are now creative effective anti-bribery systems. These systems are making it crime to offer promise or gift in any form to conduct a business. This means even the person or organization offering the bribe will be liable along with the person or institution accepting the bribe.
Even the civil society has started placing tools to fight corruption. One such tool is a global organization called Transparency International. This organization is present in over 70 countries around the world and works towards creating an honest business environment by holding government institutions responsible for accepting bribes. Transparency International comprises of independent judiciaries, investigative journalists, public officials and the public and promotes public awareness of corruption. Different chapters around the world educate people to respect the rule of law so that democracies can consolidate and there is equitable development.
