The following tips will teach how to contact the police and how to make you and your family safer during a burglary. When you come home and you see an unexplained open or broken window or door:

  • Do not enter your home as the burglar might still be inside
  • You should immediately approach your neighbor and use their phone to call the police
  • You should not touch anything in house or make an effort to clean up until the police have come and inspected your home for evidence
  • If you see a suspicious looking vehicle around your home, note down the license plate and inform the police
  • Even if you see a suspicious looking person, note down his or her description so that you can inform the police

       The important thing about a burglary is to leave the premises immediately and avoid risk of confrontation with the burglar. Then go to a neighbor’s home and immediately call 911 to report the burglary. You should stay away from your home or office until the police arrives in response to your call. Once inside your home, you should not touch anything so that the police can check for evidence like fingerprints and use it to apprehend the burglar.
