If you are getting for your vacation, or for that matter any time of the year, you should ensure that you keep your home and office safe from burglaries.

Real estate burglaries have become quite a norm these days. It has been seen that burglars are targeting not just jewelry and electronics but are also breaking in to steal people’s identities by robbing their social security numbers, credit card numbers or any other information that will allow the burglars to commit fraud or theft.

The Insurance Information Institute estimates that on an average homeowners lose $1,381 worth of things when a burglary occurs and the insurance agencies are annually coughing up $1 billion in claims.

You should make an effort to protect your home and office from real estate burglaries. If you intend going on a vacation for an extended period of time, it is important that you keep all your personal documents and computers safe. You should turn off your computer and disconnect it from the Internet. If you store your personal information on the computer, make sure it is pass-word protect so that burglars cannot get access to it.

Do not leave your personal documents lying around the house. You should store them in locked boxes and have copies of the documents stored in a totally different location. Lock and fasten all doors and windows. Make sure you lock the door attached to your garage. You can also make it appear as if you are at home by having timers on the lights, radio and television. Get a friend or a neighbor to collect your mail so that burglars do not realize that you are away.

Many insurance companies are now offering theft insurance as part of a homeowners’ policy to protect people from real estate burglaries. You can also buy this insurance as a separate policy. Usually these policies cost around $25 to $50 and give you coverage worth $25,000.
