In England, it is estimated that domestic violence costs the country over $40.2 billion annually.
The costs of child abuse and domestic violence to society and economy are very hard to estimate. Although some costs are straightforward like hospital costs of injuries, there are other costs that are more indirect and discreet. For instance, the problem of child abuse may encourage a child to have lower academic performance, terminal mental health problems, and adult criminality. It is an undeniable fact that these direct and indirect costs from child abuse and domestic violence will impact our economy and society.
A study shows that a child who has been through emotional and sexual abuse experience is more likely to have depression symptoms in his/her adulthood. In addition, childhood verbal abuse can also lead to anger hostility behaviors, and emotional abuse can lead to other mental and dissocialize problems. The statistics also suggest strong correlation between domestic violence and repeated illness. The study also reveals that eighty percent of maltreated and abused babies show signs of disorganized attachment.
