Major Drug Trafficking Arrest
| The US is trying very hard to fight drug trafficking and one major drug trafficking arrest was made in August 2006. |

The Coast Guard apprehended a Mexican drug lord, Francisco Javier Arellano Felix. This was quite a feather for the US Coast Guard as they were able to arrest the mastermind behind the cartel that was responsible for digging tunnels under the US border and were using them to transport drugs into the nation.
Arellano Felix was arrest after the coast guards boarded a sport fishing boat, which was US registered. The boat was sailing approximately 15 miles off the coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.
The whole plan was masterminded by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) after the agency figured out Arellano Felix’s fishing plans. They requested the Coast Guard to grab the boat in international waters.
This arrest is definitely a big blow to the cartel as it one of the three largest Mexican drug cartel. The cartel was once headed by 7 brothers and 4 sisters. However, Arellano Felix’s brother, Ramon, was killed in 2002 during a shootout with the police, his brother Benjamin is languishing in a Mexican prison and the other brother Eduardo is absconding in Mexico and is not considered capable of leading the cartel.
Arellano Felix is wanted in both Mexico and the United States for his role as leader of a sophisticated and violent Tijuana-based gang, which was responsible for 20 murders in the US and Mexico.
The Arellano Felix cartel along with Gulf Cartel and Federacion are considered to be largest Mexican drug cartel. Arellano Felix cartel is said to be responsible for digging a tunnel from a warehouse in Tijuana to a warehouse in San Diego. This tunnel was discovered in 2005 and over 2 tons of marijuana were found in the tunnel.
