There is no doubt that the long war the US has been waging against drug trafficking has primarily been a failure.
One of the best solutions to drug trafficking is to legalize drugs and have governmental control over the sale of these illegal drugs. We all know that prohibition did not work against alcohol and it definitely will not work against drugs like marijuana, cocaine, crack or heroine. The best solution to drug trafficking available to the government is legalizing drugs so that drug-related crimes decrease and the proliferation of drug addicts will slow down to a certain extent.
As drug-related crimes in the US increase, more and more people are speaking about legalizing drugs to solve the drug problem. One such person to speak out for legalization is Gore Vidal, who is considered to one of the finest living essayists in America. He believes that the US should make all drugs available and sell them at cost. Each drug should be labeled with the description of effect the drug will have on the user.
Many vocal supporters of legalization of drugs believe that it would make the country a much safer place as addicts would be able to get doctors to write prescriptions for them to get drugs cheaply and they would not have to resort to criminal behavior. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Columbia’s Nobel Prize winning novelist, believes that prohibition of drugs has made drug trafficking a more attractive trade in the US and other countries.
However, opponents of legalizing drugs do not think this is the way forward. They believe that the solution to drug trafficking is increasing efforts to stop infiltration of drugs into the country by improving border control and law enforcement activities.
Then there are others who believe the solution to drug trafficking is introducing cash cropping systems in drug producing regions. This way interest in producing drugs will reduce as the cash crops will be able to generate money for peasants and farmers.
