The statistics of drug trafficking in the United States is quite amazing. Drug trafficking accounts for nearly 40 percent of the country’s crime activities and generates over $110 billion annually for the drug lords.
It is believed that over 14.8 million Americans are drug users at any given point. This percent is over 6.7 percent of the population encompassing 12 years and older.
In fact, it is believed that drug trafficking in the US is the most profitable compared to any other country. The trade attracts the most sophisticated, ruthless and aggressive drug traffickers. The drug enforcement agencies in the US face an uphill task protecting the borders. According to the US Customs 60 million enter the US on more than 675,000 private and commercial flights. Besides these, another 6 million come by sea and 370 million by land. In addition, 116 million vehicles cross the borders from Canada and Mexico and over 90,000 merchant ships and passenger ships dock at ports across the US. Given the volume of people coming in, drug traffickers use ingenious methods to conceal and transport drugs into the United States.
The border between the United States and Mexico is the major point of entry for cocaine into the US. Nearly 65 percent of cocaine is smuggled into the US from the southwest border and this has resulted in cocaine being readily available in all major cities.
In 2007, the US Drug Enforcement Administration issued the following statistics for drug seizure:
Cocaine - 96,713 kgs
Heroine - 625 kgs
Marijuana - 356,472 kgs
Methamphetamine - 1,086 kgs
