The punishment for forgery depends on the financial value of the instrument that has been forged. The punishment, thus, depends on the degrees of forgery and in the US there are primarily there three degrees of forgery. They are as follows:
- Forgery in the third degree: A person is found guilty of forgery in the third degree if he falsely makes, completes or alters a written instrument with the intention of defrauding, deceiving or injuring someone else. This type of forgery is a Class A misdemeanor.
- Forgery in the second degree: A person is guilty of forgery in the second degree if he falsely makes, completes or alters a written instrument so that the instrument is deemed to be completed. Under this, any forgery done to a deed, public record, prescription from a licensed physician, issue of public transportation transfer, certificates or an instrument officially issued by a public office is an offense. Forgery in the second degree is a Class D felony.
