Forgery is to falsely make, or alter public records, certificates, or attestations in such a way so that these forged instruments can be used to defraud, deceive or injure another person or organization. There are three degrees of forgery and one is punished based on the financial value of the attempt.
What is uttery forgery?
To pass a forged instrument as real is considered to be uttery forgery. A person is guilty of uttery forgery even if he or she is not the one who forged the instrument. If you utter false records in an attempt to defraud a person or organization, you are guilty and it is considered to be a felony. You can a sentence of up to 2 years in jail or 10 years in prison.
People use forged documents for various reasons: to gain from a will, to make money from someone else’s bonds or stocks, to show they are of good character etc. However, if you know that the documents that you have a false and knowing this fact, you still attempt to use them, you are definitely in for big trouble. You will immediately be guilty of forgery in the third degree and you will receive punishment based on the financial value of the forged documents; that is depending on how much you would have gained if the false documents were accepted.
