Drunken driving costs the government billions of dollars in medical care and other services like fire, police and ambulance facilities.
Like any other country, driving under influence of drugs and/or alcohol and in an intoxicated condition that impairs one’s driving skills are illegal in America. When a person’s blood alcohol concentration exceeds a 0.08 unit milligram per deciliter he is said to have exceeded the permissible limit and is charged with a criminal offence. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines a fatal collision as alcohol related if it is found that the driver had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.01 or more. Serious penalties of varying degrees like a jail term or a larger fine is imposed if the BAC is over 0.15. Lawmakers are seriously considering making zero tolerance laws for those drivers arrested for consuming drugs and/or alcohol.
Establishment of special courts such as the DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) courts has been found to be effective in controlling drunken driving to a certain extent.
If a person is stopped on suspicion of DWI, he can drive and leave only after the blood alcohol concentration of the driver is measured and found to be within the legal limits. Breathalyzers have been developed to conduct roadside checks to detect the level of alcohol present inside the body. It has been right said, “If we cannot stop drunks from driving, let us stop vehicles from driving drunks.”
