There are clear benefits use of Accutane. Unfortunately, Accutane is also known to cause birth defects for pregnant women. Furthermore, there are some accusation that the drug cause depressive and suicidal behavior.
The studies of Accutane before its approval from FDA showed that it may cause birth defects in some animals. Accutane was categorized under “Category X”. Other words, women who are pregnant should avoid using it under all circumstances.
Even though Roche warned Accutane users about their side effects on their label, birth defects from the use of Accutane still happened. The survey showed that three in thousand of women who use Accutane became pregnant. Therefore, FDA required Roche to make more labeling changes.
Suicidal behavior and behavior are also potential serious effect of Accutante. The studies show some link between depression and vitamin A. They both have similarity. Some says that there are a connection between developing depression and taking Accutane. Nevertheless, there are clear scientific evidence that prove the connections. Roche added to Accutane label about the possible psychiatric problems in Febuary 2002.
